Field Exploration in Boston’s Intertidal Zone | Understanding Urban Oceans.
Team : Watching-Place; Jenni Chow, Eleanor Horton, Adam Horowitz, Agnes Cameron, Crystal Johnson; MIT Sea Grant | Funded by MIT Media Lab, Open Ocean Initiative
We developed this workshop series as part of our funding for National Geographic between 2018 and 2020, and as part of MIT’s Open Exploration Initiative. Intended as part of a larger learning framework centered on urban ecology, the Field Exploration took place in Pleasure Bay (Boston, MA)--an urban beach next to an industrial park and highly urbanized neighborhood. Young learners and their families developed hypotheses about unique phenomena taking place in the urban intertidal zone, and took to the field to generate data and find answers. In the process, they engaged with ecologists from MIT Sea Grant as well as Media Lab researchers to provide guidance and facilitation.
